For nearly ten long years, Rockland, an aging dog, called the hallways of an apartment building his humble abode. He lived a solitary existence, depending on the kindness of compassionate residents who would provide him with food and occasional watchful eyes. But despite his resilience, Rockland yearned for more.
When the tenants recognized that they could no longer care for Rockland, they reached out to Animal Haven for assistance. Finally, after all those years, the sweet senior dog found safety and shelter. However, the prospect of a forever family still seemed distant as he waited in his kennel.
Tedi Sarah, a devoted volunteer at Animal Haven, understood the challenges that came with finding a home for an older dog. To add to the difficulties, Rockland was diagnosed with cancer, making time of the essence. Nevertheless, Sarah was determined to ensure that Rockland would experience the love and comfort of a genuine family during his golden years.
“I felt an instant connection with him and knew I had to intervene,” Sarah shared with The Dodo. “I couldn’t bear the thought of him passing away in the shelter without ever experiencing the warmth and affection of a loving family.”
Using the power of social media, Sarah shared a heartfelt video, appealing to potential adopters to consider Rockland’s plight. It was Christmas, and Rockland faced another holiday alone, a scenario Sarah was determined to change.
In her post, Sarah expressed the collective adoration the shelter staff felt for Rockland and their fervent desire to see him find a forever family while there was still time. The response was overwhelming, as numerous individuals resonated with Rockland’s story and wished him happiness.

Sarah was astounded by the swift and enthusiastic influx of adoption applications. Among them, Bessy Gatto stood out as the ideal match for Rockland. Gatto, known for her immense compassion and history of rescuing special needs dogs, had been following Rockland’s journey through Sarah’s previous posts. When she saw the Christmas plea, she wasted no time in contacting the shelter to express her interest in adopting him.
Rockland not only gained a loving new mom in Gatto but also found himself embraced by a host of new siblings. No longer would he have to endure loneliness, for his sociable nature could now flourish in the company of his new family.
“Rockland’s story is one of my most cherished success stories because it unfolded so quickly!” Sarah exclaimed.
With his gentle demeanor, Rockland became an older brother to his canine siblings and a cherished companion to Gatto’s two human children. It is evident that he is adored by all, and the days of solitude are firmly behind him.
