Lion Husband Stays By His Sick Wife’s Side Until Her Last Moments

Leo and Muñeca share a lifelong connection that spans countless memories. Rescued from a circus in Peru by Animal Defenders International (ADI) in 2014, this lion couple and their offspring have remained inseparable, apart from a brief separation during their rescue.

“Leo, along with their sons Chino, Coco, and Rolex, were successfully rescued during the initial operation in August 2014. However, the circus managed to halt the seizure midway and went into hiding,” explained Jan Creamer, the president of ADI. “After six months, ADI located them over 600 miles away and saved Muñeca and their daughters, Africa and Kiara… They spent most of their time together, exploring their spacious 4-acre habitat and finding solace under the shade of trees.”

In August, Muñeca fell unexpectedly ill, prompting Leo to intensify his already protective nature towards her.

“Leo has always been watchful over Muñeca, but when she became unwell, he sensed that something was amiss,” said Creamer. “He made efforts to encourage her to eat and provided comfort.”

Throughout Muñeca’s illness, Leo dutifully stood guard by her side, tenderly cuddling her in an attempt to alleviate her discomfort. These poignant moments exemplified the profound love shared between the lion pair, serving as a testament to the expressive nature of their affection.

“We have witnessed the remarkable closeness and deep bonds between lion companions on numerous occasions,” Creamer remarked.

Scientific research has unveiled that lions embrace cuddling as a means to reinforce their social connections. Leo and Muñeca’s countless cuddles over the years attested to this understanding.

Regrettably, in September, Muñeca passed away at the age of 19. Leo remained by her side until the very end, ensuring that she departed from this world fully aware of the unwavering love he held for her.

Leo’s rescuers have been closely monitoring him as he grieves the loss of his beloved Muñeca. They have showered him with extra treats and attention to aid in his healing process. While the loss of Muñeca brought profound sorrow, the poignant moments of Leo’s devoted care for her will forever be etched in the memories of all who witnessed it.
