Pomsky: all about this breed

The pomsky is a design dog that comes from a cross between a husky and a Pomeranian. This new breed fuses the best-known traits of its progenitors, but with fewer health problems. Its appearance is quite cute and photogenic, which is why it has gained a lot of popularity among people who love dogs.

Design dogs, also called hybrids, are produced by crossing two pure breeds. This process causes them to be considered mestizos or “unclean”, which is why international associations that regulate canine standards do not recognize their lineage. Keep reading this article to learn more about the peculiar pomsky breed.

The hybrid between a husky and a pomeranian lulu

Hybrid dogs are bred with the aim of combining the most attractive characteristics of two different breeds into a single dog. This significantly improves certain aspects such as behavior, health or physical appearance. For this, it is necessary to use established (pure) breeds whose characteristics do not change much, otherwise it would not be possible to predict the appearance of the new dog.

The pomsky is bred with the aim of having a dog with the adorable and attractive appearance of a husky, but with the small size of a Pomeranian lulu . This combination is quite popular and has also earned it the nickname minihusky.

Origin of pomsky

As with other design dogs , the origin of the pomsky is uncertain. However, everything seems to indicate that the idea of generating this new race was obtained through false images transmitted electronically . In 2011, a news portal published a photograph of a small laphaund with the description “the pomeranian + siberian husky mix ”.

This caught the attention of many people, despite the publication being denied by several netizens. Fortunately, dog breeder Tressa Peterson saw this image and began to wonder if such a cross was possible. After a year of research, and with the help of other colleagues, she artificially inseminates a husky with sperm from a Pomeranian lulu .

Features of pomsky

This dog does not yet have well-established fixed standards, as there are more variations of this breed. Despite this, it is about 30 centimeters tall, weighing between 7 and 14 kilograms. Its physical appearance closely resembles that of a husky , but in miniature . Plus, he inherits the “youthful” traits of the Pomeranian, which is one of the reasons he looks so adorable.

The eyes can be blue, brown or even heterochromatic (one eye of each color). The coat is dense, of great length and quite voluminous, so that the animal resembles a small bear. Coat coloration generally maintains the white and gray patterns of its larger parent, but other variations are also possible.

Main variations of pomsky

Bringing the pomsky to life requires artificial insemination of the husky, which is an expensive and unprofitable process. Therefore, we sought to make production efficient through normal crosses. This managed to generate 2 different variants which are listed below:

  • 50% and 50%: It’s the first generation. It is produced by inseminating a husky with Pomeranian lulu semen. Its size can vary between 25 and 39 centimeters in height.
  • 75% and 25%: This is a new variant that uses a first-generation pomsky to mate with a Pomeranian. This makes the resulting specimen only have 25% of the husky’s genes. Her body size is less than 25 centimeters in height.

Personality

This breed is very playful and active , as it loves to get the attention of its owners and receive affection. They are very attached to the family, but can socialize well with other people and animals. Keep in mind that some specimens tend to be a little more territorial and aggressive. However, this is easy to control if they are taught to socialize from an early age.

main care

This dog’s energy must be used throughout the day, otherwise it will start to have anxiety problems and bad behavior. One of the best ways to deal with this is through daily walks of at least 30 minutes. This is the least amount of exercise he should get, although it’s always better if you have extra time for walks or extra play around the house.

The biggest problem with the pomsky is that it inherits the husky’s coat, which means it can lose a lot of hair in certain seasons . To avoid this, he gets into the habit of brushing his coat every day. It is also possible to take advantage of this moment to interact more with your pet. That way, the traces of fur will be minimized and the relationship between you will be improved.

Pet education is an important point in its care. This process is often a little challenging with pomskys, as it sometimes inherits the husky’s proud behavior. To avoid any conflict, most tutors prefer to use positive reinforcement for training.
