‘Broken’ Dog Can’t Stop Smiling When He Realizes He’s Being Rescued

Sanford’s past had been marred by hardship, earning him the label of a “broken dog.” Nevertheless, his current demeanor exudes unbridled joy, showcasing an infectious smile that never seems to fade.

Karen Velazquez, Sanford’s foster mom, describes him as the happiest dog she’s ever encountered. Having fostered 52 dogs, she can confidently assert that Sanford’s boundless happiness stands unparalleled. His expressive eyes convey a unique affection, making Velazquez feel utterly cherished.

However, Sanford’s journey to happiness had not been without obstacles. Rescued by animal control after being struck by a car, Sanford was left unable to walk. In addition to the accident’s impact, rescuers discovered a bullet wound in his right hind leg. Initially placed in a small municipal shelter in Dallas, Texas, Sanford lacked the medical attention he desperately needed.

Enter Dallas DogRRR, a local dog rescue group, and one dedicated volunteer who saw Sanford’s plight and knew she had to intervene. Kerry Anechiarico, the executive director of Dallas DogRRR, observed Sanford’s defeated spirit at the shelter and recognized the urgency to save him from despair.

A turning point in Sanford’s life came when he found foster care with Velazquez. Arriving at her home on May 1, just days after being discharged from the hospital, Sanford’s transformation was remarkable. A radiant smile never left his face, as if he knew he had finally found a safe haven.

Now affectionately known as ‘Sanfee’ to Velazquez, Sanford relishes his days filled with home-cooked meals, leisurely strolls, and playtime with Velazquez and her canine companions.

Despite being considered a senior at 10 years old, Sanford defies his age with an exuberant spirit, much like a sprightly 50-year-old.

While Sanford thrives in his foster home, everyone hopes he’ll soon find his forever family. Endearing and gentle, he is an ideal family dog, getting along famously with other dogs and humans alike.

Even children find a special bond with him, making him the perfect companion to welcome home.
